In an homage to the cobbled spring classics, I have created a route that criss-crosses the north end of Tacoma, seeking out the cobbles and the steepest climbs, with a few unpaved shortcuts for good measure.
The ride takes place on the Saturday of Holy Week. This is the week between the Tour Of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix (which is affectionately referred to as “The Hell of The North”).
The starting and end point is Delightful Market on North 45th street. I will lead the ride out at 9am and will plan on maintaining a 12-14 mph pace. I will wait to regroup at the top of climbs within reason, but this is not a “no-drop ride”. It is also not a race. You get nothing for completing the route, other than the knowledge that you did, and possibly a high five.
The route is 27 miles with 2200 feet of climbing. You can download the route (which I highly recommend) and ride with the group, or with your friends at your own pace. The route will be difficult regardless of how slow or fast you ride it.
Ride whatever bike you like including e-bikes (although you will undoubtedly regret the weight of an e-bike once you have to climb the stairs). Due to the variable surfaces of the route, I would recommend at least a 32mm tire, but you may be happier on something larger. There is no support on the route. You are responsible for yourself and your bike. (Helmets are required).
This is not a closed course. The route criss-crosses streets and cuts through alleyways and parks, please follow all rules of the road and be as safe as possible. There are also several stretches of the route that take place on shared multi-use trails. **Always yield to pedestrians.
In the spirit of the Spring Classics, fenders are highly discouraged.
The ride takes place rain or shine. Be Safe. Have fun. Hope to see you out there!
